Caring for Your Child’s Oral Health as They Grow Up

Your child’s oral health plays a large role in their quality of life. From the moment they’re born, you’re in charge of managing their oral care needs until they’re old enough to take on the responsibility themselves.

New parents can help keep their baby’s mouth clean by washing their gums with a damp, clean washcloth until their first tooth grows. After that, you may use a soft-bristled toothbrush and toothpaste to clean their new teeth.

Our team can help you preserve your child’s oral health when you come in for regular appointments. We recommend booking your child’s first dental appointment by their first birthday, or within 6 months of growing their first tooth.

Common Oral Health Concerns in Children

Proper oral health care means properly managing bacteria and sugar buildup in your child’s mouth.

Sugars lead to common oral health issues like tooth decay and gum disease, which, in turn, could lead to more severe problems like tooth loss if not managed properly. Our team looks for these issues during your child’s dental exam and cleaning to address them as soon as possible.

If we notice any further problems, we’ll be happy to provide strategies that suit your child’s needs and lifestyle.

Tooth decay, also known as a cavity, is a common oral health problem that develops when bacteria from plaque wears down the enamel of your child’s teeth. Eventually, a cavity can progress through their tooth’s dentin and into their tooth pulp, potentially leading to an infection.

Fillings can help prevent cavities from developing further, but a root canal may be needed to address tooth pulp infections. In unique cases, we may recommend a tooth extraction.

Gum disease can develop if plaque and tartar release bacteria and toxins into your gums that cause them to retract and bleed. Gum disease starts as gingivitis before becoming periodontitis, an issue that can loosen teeth, cause bad breath, and lead to jaw bone damage.

It’s not uncommon for teeth to grow a little crooked or misaligned, but it could lead to certain oral health problems if they’re not addressed.

We’re proud to offer several different orthodontic options to help align your child’s teeth, which can help make it easier for them to keep their teeth clean as well as enjoy a straighter smile.
